Tohoku University Establishes a Co-Creation Research Center with Nippon Koei
Nippon Koei Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of ID&E Holdings Co., Ltd., and Tohoku University will establish the Nippon Koei × Tohoku Univ. “The Good City” Co-creation Research Institute within the Graduate School of Engineering at Tohoku University on April 1, 2026, and commence its activities.
Nippon Koei’s corporate philosophy is “Act with sincerity and contribute to society through technology.” The company has grown by continuously refining its technologies and providing its accumulated technical expertise as services to society. Technological development is positioned as one of the company’s key strategic priorities for creating new businesses. Through co-creation with diverse partners, Nippon Koei aims to further advance technologies cultivated through infrastructure-related projects in Japan and overseas and accelerate technological innovation. The establishment of the Institute is part of this initiative.
At the Institute, Nippon Koei’s advanced expertise and know-how in the field of civil engineering will be integrated with Tohoku University’s world-class research capabilities. By combining knowledge from diverse academic fields, including engineering, economics, and the humanities, the Institute will promote research and development aimed at comprehensively enhancing urban disaster and environmental resilience through integrated initiatives utilizing disaster digital twins and environmental and lifeline assessment technologies.
Nippon Koei and Tohoku University have collaborated through joint research initiatives for many years. In the “Resilient City Technology Implementation Joint Research Division,” established in 2022, the two organizations have promoted collaborative research aimed at advancing earthquake response technologies. In 2024, they jointly developed a technology capable of instantly predicting citywide damage through real-time seismic motion monitoring.
Through the Institute, Nippon Koei and Tohoku University will further deepen their collaboration while also engaging in foresight research that anticipates future societal changes and urban challenges. Together, they will further advance research and development toward the realization of a truly “Good City.”
