Development of the method of Baby Borehole Hydraulic Fracturing, BABHY

  • For the effective measurement of the reopening pressure in hydraulic fracturing, it is necessary to use the testing equipment with sufficiently small compliance. This limitation makes it difficult to apply the hydraulic fracturing for the measurement of the maximum stress, because the compliance of conventional equipments is generally so large. Taking account of this situation, we proposed a new concept which allows us to do the in-situ tests of hydraulic fracturing for stress measurement at so deep depths as more than 1 km. We call the concept the Baby Borehole Hydrofracturing, BABHY for short. In order to put the new concept into practice, we developed the BABHY sonde and finally we succeeded to carry out hydraulic fracturing test by using the tools in a vertical borehole of 811 m depth. We hope to conduct collaborative research with a willing company for a practical application of this technology in industry.

newDevelopment of a Numerical Prediction System for Sliding Part Wear and Seizure Occurrence Portions

Focusing on the lubricant film flow with phase change between the engine piston pin and connecting rod small end, we developed a new multiphase fluid-structure coupled analysis method that takes into account elastic deformation of the structure and flow path changes and developed a simulation prediction method for tribological properties under high load conditions. The simulation prediction method for tribological properties under high load conditions has been created. As a result, we succeeded in simulation prediction of the wear/seizure generating areas in sliding parts. We discovered that the peculiar deformation behavior of the components is the cause of wear/seizure.

It has been thought that computational prediction is impossible to verify the wear and seizure locations in fluid lubrication. Still, this study succeeded in the simulation prediction of wear and seizure locations in sliding parts.

  • Toward realizing a high-performance neuromorphic vision processing system, our research involves a neural network model of spatial perception based on motion-stereo vision and its implementation on a very large scale integrated circuit (VLSI). Important parameters for spatial perception such as time-to-contact, orientation, and the shortest distance to plane surfaces of a target object are recognized by using the model without knowing moving direction and velocity of the object. We have developed a VLSI capable of performing visual perception based on the model with low power consumption, reduced less than 1/100 compared with a commercial CPU.

  • The Smart Aging International Research Center (SAIRC) was founded on 1 October 2009. This Center proposes the creation of a new field to produce well-rounded personnel who have gained “totally comprehensive intelligence” from their experience, in order to cope with various problems associated with the diverse and complex super-aging society. To this end, the Center will promote interdisciplinary cooperative research, international collaborative research projects, and research collaborations with industry, as well as disseminate and exchange information by holding international conferences and symposia.  The SAIRC is designed to develop an approach for maintaining and improving brain and mental health in a diverse and complex society from the standpoints of brain science, with the aim of maintaining and improving brain functions; cognitive neuroscience and psychology, with the aim of maintaining a healthy and tranquil state of mind at each aging stage; and philosophy, phenomenology and ethics that provide a radical reconsideration of the concept of the “mind.” We welcome collaborative researches with companies, and academic consultations.

Image Guided Local Drug Delivery for Central Nervous System Disorders

  • Effective drug delivery to central nervous system is promising as a new therapeutic strategy against various central nervous system disorders. However, it represents a challenge because systemic delivery is always hindered by blood brain barrier, and local delivery cannot be effective because of the restricted distribution. Recently, local drug delivery system that can achieve robust distribution of the infusates by maintaining a pressure gradient at the tip of the infusion catheter during infusion has developed. Although this method is promising, there still exist several problems as loss of infusates by backflow through catheter tract or inconsistent distribution. We recently developed a method to deliver agents with this method under MRI guidance, and now performing clinical trial to treat recurrent gliomas.

Focal central nervous system disorders such as tumor, epilepsy, and parkinson's disease can be the target for application of this technique. Developments of the new catheters and pre-infusional similation systems are on their way. We are searching for effective collaborative research in this field.

  • We will develop a brainmorphic computing hardware, which realizes the brain-specific functions such as conscious/sub-conscious process, self, selective attention, and so on, by directly using inherent physics and dynamics of constituent devices. The resulting hardware would be small, efficient, high-performance. Some examples include the chaotic neural network reservoir, optimization through high-dimensional complex dynamics, and neural network composed of spin-orbit torque nano-devices.
  • The resulting hardware is suitable for the edge AI which learns users’ personal behavior. Examples include watching service devices embedded in hearing aids or dental implants, which monitor and learn personal cardiac and brain-wave signals or saliva ingredients, to detect abnormal situations.

Therefore, it is very important to investigate biological features of breast carcinoma in order to improve clinical outcome of the patients. It is well known that estrogens play important roles in the development of human breast carcinomas, and endocrine therapies are frequently used in these patients to block the intratumoral estrogen actions. In the Division of Pathology and Histotechnology, we analyze hormone actions in breast carcinoma by pathological methods as well as various molecular biological techniques.

Molecular studies on new resources for hybrid rice breeding

  • F1 hybrid breeding is one of the most advanced techniques for production of cultivars with higher yield and desirable traits of both parents. Most of hybrid rice utilize cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) and fertility restoration system. We develop a Tohoku University-original CW-type CMS and fertility restorer line and study their molecular mechanism. The CW-type cytoplasm enables indica rice cultivars to be CMS, which could not be achieved by other known cytoplasm.

  • Our research group has succeeded in synthesizing various metal oxide nanoparticles with controlled size and exposure crystal planes by using organic modifiers under supercritical water conditions. The oxygen storage/release capacity of those materials in the low-temperature region is very high, and the reforming reaction of oxidative hydrocarbon proceeds at a significant rate. Besides, by combining the supercritical CO2 drying method, we have succeeded in forming a complex in which oxide nanoparticles are dispersed at a high concentration on the surface of the porous material, realizing both high oxygen storage/release capability and stability.
