• The aim of our research are to obtain the high accuracy sensor system for the signals from the human body or electric devices and to obtain the system for approaching action to the human body by using the nano-scale controlled magnetic materials and by the development of the devices under the functions of the magnetics.
• We studied the mechanism of obtaining the magnetic anisotropy of the magnetic thin films for the sensitive magnetic sensors. We obtained a non-metal probe for high frequency magnetic field, and confirmed the probe can measure the high frequency magnetic field with its phase information. In addition, 3D position detecting system using magnetic markers was studied to improve its position accuracy. The study about the magnetic actuator driven by the external magnetic field was carried out for biomimetic robots using the rotational magnetic field, and small wireless pumps were obtained and clarified for their application for an artificial heart-support pump.

• Conventional X-ray imaging methods that rely on X-ray attenuation cannot generate clear contrast in the observation of low-density materials such as polymers consisting of low-Z elements. However, the sensitivity to the materials can be improved drastically by X-ray phase imaging that detects X-ray refraction caused by the materials. X-ray Talbot or Talbot-Lau interferometry consisting of X-ray transmission gratings is now constructed in laboratories for X-ray phase imaging. X-ray phase tomography is also realized, enabling high-sensitive three-dimensional observation.
• X-ray phase imaging can be utilized for X-ray non-destructive testing of industrial products and baggage that cannot be checked conventionally.

We aim at appending a phase-contrast mode to micro-CT apparatuses and developing screening apparatuses in production lines.

• We successfully realized millisecond-order X-ray phase tomography using a fringe-scanning method in grating-based X-ray interferometry. We obtained phase tomograms with a measurement time of 4.43 ms using a white synchrotron X-ray beam. The use of a fringe-scanning method enables us to achieve not only a higher spatial resolution but also a higher signal-to-noise ratio than that attained by the Fourier transform method. In addition, our approach can be applied to realize four-dimensional or high-throughput X-ray tomography for samples that can be rotated at a high speed.

• Our research target is mainly focused on the topic of development of novel scintillator crystals, piezoelectric crystals, growth technology, characterization and its device application.
• We design and synthesize new materials from a view point of Crystal Chemistry, and investigate their structure and physical properties. We also study on photo-detector, as suitable photo-detector fully contribute to get maximum signal from scintillator. This activity is very important to realize practical application of our developed materials. Recently, piezoelectric material and high melting temperature alloy project is also started.

For the purpose of "real" contribution to human culture, we are always carrying out our research activity considering the industrial application. This point is unique feature of our attitude toward science.

• Recently, with a spread of high definition video streaming services and ubiquitous network, development of high-quality, ultra-realistic and low-power display systems has been demanded. We have been studying physical properties of liquid crystal materials, precise control technique of polarization, high performance liquid crystal display (LCD) devices and its application to the advanced display systems for the realization of new media such as electric paper display and digital signage display, and low-energy society. We established a polarization control technology which realizes a precise control of polarization with liquid crystal materials. By using this world-leading technology, we have been studying the control of the surface alignment of liquid crystal molecules and developed a wide-viewing angle and fast switching liquid crystal display, ultra-high definition field-sequential-color display (Fig. 1), ultra-low power reflective full-color display (Fig. 2) and large-size high-quality display system.
• We are also studying the ultra-realistic display systems such as a spatial 3D display and a multiple directional viewing display based on the precise light control technique as a next generation interactive communication technologies (Fig.3). We hope to conduct collaborative research with a willing company for a practical application of this technology in industry.

• Monoatomic layered materials of Graphene, Transition metal sulfide nanosheet, nanocrystalline active materials, nanoparticles and nanoporous materials are investigated for realizing high capacity, high power, high safety and low cost energy storage devices as a post- Lithium ion battery. Advanced chemistry of functional materials and device processes for All solid state battery, Magnesium battery, fuel cells, supercapacitor and wearable batteries are investigated.

Academia – Industry collaboration with manufacturing companies of functional materials, batteries, and also smart grid, renewable energy, electrical power companies are encouraged for developments of advanced energy materials and post-Lithium ion battery.

As a global leader in three-dimensional stacking (3D-IC) and chiplet integration technologies, which are driving performance improvements in next-generation semiconductors, our laboratory has spearheaded research in chip-to-wafer type three-dimensional integration for over 20 years. Utilizing unique technologies, including "self-alignment packaging" that leverages the surface tension of droplets, we have tackled the challenging trade-off between positional accuracy and throughput, contributing to the realization of ultra-high-speed, low-power AI chip systems.
Furthermore, we have developed "dilet" technology, which miniaturizes silicon chips and embeds them in flexible substrates, establishing a platform that enables high-performance device mounting on curved surfaces. This has made significant contributions to the integration and applied research of flexible devices, such as wearable systems that naturally fit the arm, blood vessel visualization sheets, and low-power phototherapy devices that integrate chips and fine wiring into hydrogels primarily composed of water.

From basic research to social implementation utilizing GINTI, we are promoting consistent technological development and opening up new possibilities in semiconductor integration technology.

Compared to conventional planar mounting, vertical stacking of chips (3D-IC) shortens wiring length and dramatically improves signal transmission capability and energy efficiency. Furthermore, self-alignment enables the simultaneous placement of tens of thousands of tiny chips at ultra-high speed and precision

• At IEDM2005, we demonstrated the world's first chip-to-wafer 3D stacking, and since then, we have continued to showcase our achievements at IEDM, leading the way in industrial applications. By using the surface tension of droplets for self-alignment, we have achieved both nano-precision and high throughput, and have established dielet technology that conforms to flexible substrates, as well as die-level 3D-ICs utilizing existing ICs. Furthermore, through collaboration with GINTI and venture companies, we are promoting high-speed prototyping and social implementation.

Applications are envisioned in areas such as HPC, edge AI, and medical devices. We anticipate collaboration with materials and equipment manufacturers to co-create new materials and processes, as well as design and fabless companies exploring innovative structures.
