Prediction and Prevention of Fractures

NEXT
PREV
特徴・独自性
  • We have been developing methods for explicating the dominant factors that determine the physical and chemical properties of materials and stacked structures used in human societies. Since the number of element atoms which consists of advanced materials has been increasing, and the crystallographic structure of the materials has become very complicated, both the various properties and reliability of the materials fluctuate significantly in nano-scale, and thus, deteriorate easily due to the local damages of the materials.
実用化イメージ

To design the optimal structure, composition of materials, and the fabrication process of both materials and stacked structures, we are going to develop a method of analyzing the atomic structure of thin film materials based on quantum mechanics and experimental methods for measuring material properties, atomic scale damage or defects in nano-materials.

特徴・独自性
  • The cold spray (CS) technique is known as a new technique not only for coating but also for thick depositions. It has many advantages, i.e. dense coating, high deposition rate, low oxidation, and no phase transformation. We have been carrying out establishment of innovative preparing and coating techniques using the CS, and maintenance of reliability and safety of the cold sprayed repairing parts and coatings. Moreover, in order to evaluate the compatibility between a substrate material and particles based on an adhesion mechanism and scientific basis, various adhesion conditions are examined a micro / nano-structure observation and a molecular simulation.

Design and Development of 50 kg-class Micro Satellites

NEXT
PREV
特徴・独自性
  • We design and develop micro satellites in a format of 50 cm cubic size and 50 kg mass. We have developed the first and second micro satellites of Tohoku University, named “RISING” and “RISING-2”, launched by using JAXA’s H-IIA rocket vehicle in January 2009 and May 2014, respectively. Both satellites are operated from our ground station in the university. Particularly, RISING-2 has succeeded in capturing high precision color images of the Earth's surface at a spatial resolution of 5m, the highest in the world among 50kg-class satellites. Now the third micro satellite for international science mission is under the development. In addition, we are active in nano satellite development. The first nano-sat “RAIKO” in a 10 by 10 by 20 cm format was launched from the International Space Station in 2012. More nano-sats are under the development.

NEXT
PREV
特徴・独自性
  • One of our major research focuses is to design the novel drug nanoparticles, so called “Nano-prodrugs”, and to apply them as anticancer drugs or eye drops with excellent delivery efficiency. Nano-prodrugs are constructed by synthetic prodrugs molecules which contains poorly water-soluble substituent. They could be fabricated to nanoparticles with 100 nm or less in size by our reprecipitation technique, which has been used to create organic nanomaterials. We are aiming at practical application of our Nano-prodrugs in the near future.
実用化イメージ

Our reprecipitation technique for fabricating organic nanomaterials is a versatile technique that can be applied to various organic molecules as well as drug compounds. We hope to conduct collaborative research with a willing company on controlling and evaluating properties of the organic nanoparticles.

特徴・独自性
  • Surface modification method to improve fatigue strength has been developed using cavitation impacts, which are normally causes severe damage in hydraulic machineries. The method was called "cavitation peening". In order to make clear the mechanism, a load controlled plate bending fatigue test machine was developed. It was proved by using the test machine that the threshold level of stress intensity factor was improved about 1.9 times by cavitation peening. The mitigation of hydrogen embrittlement by cavitation peening was also improved.

The Construction of a Decentralized Energy Production System Using Small Methane Fermentation Systems That Utilize Exhaust Heat or Hot Springs and a Local Circulation System

NEXT
PREV
特徴・独自性
  • In this project, we reduce the costs of energy production via anaerobic digestion by utilizing exhaust heat from a factory, which resulted in a positive energy balance, although the methane fermentation system tested was on a small scale.
  • Using small-scale methane fermentation with a positive energy balance, the initial investment is small, enabling a company to invest in, and install, such a system. This would decentralize energy production within an area. Moreover, this system not only produces energy, but is a basis for resource recycling.

Converting Food Waste into Valuable Materials with Hot-Compressed Water Treatment

NEXT
PREV
特徴・独自性
  • Treatment with hot-compressed or subcritical water is an attractive process for converting food waste into valuable materials. Water is an environmentally acceptable solvent and is cost effective; thus, hot-compressed water has recently received attention as a medium for resource recovery from waste. We chose fish gelatin as a model of marine food waste (especially fish skin fraction), and we determined the optimum conditions for the degradation of fish gelatin with hot-compressed water between 160 and 240 °C at 2 MPa. These conditions were optimized in terms of maximizing the concentrations of specific degradation products, such as peptides, and ACE inhibitory.
実用化イメージ

The disposal of fish waste has become a serious problem in marine food industries because approximately half of the fish mass, including the skin, bones, entrails, and some meat. The feasibility of converting organic waste by hot-compressed water (subcritical water treatment) into useful resources has been demonstrated together with Industry.

Oral Biofilm Functional Analysis: from “What Are They?" to “What Are They Doing?"

NEXT
PREV
特徴・独自性
  • A large number of microorganisms inhabit the oral cavity, such as the teeth, gingiva and tongue, in the form of oral biofilm. The oral cavity forms an ecosystem where the host (humans) and parasites (microorganisms) coexist. Disruption of the balance of this oral ecosystem leads to dental caries, periodontal diseases and oral malodor, and even deterioration of dental materials.
  • Using leading-edge techniques of anaerobic experimental systems including original and unique devices, as well as the notion of "omics" such as metagenomics and metabolomics, we conduct research on oral biofilm functions. Knowledge of oral biofilms, from "what are they?" to "what are they doing?", enables us to address their control, that is, prevention of and therapy for oral biofilm-associated diseases.

  • Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies in women worldwide. Therefore, it is very important to investigate biological features of breast carcinoma in order to improve clinical outcome of the patients.
