特徴・独自性
  • According to recent studies, each video that is streamed online has its own unique characteristic. The pattern of data that are sent through the network can vary from one encoding method to another and the change from scene to scene, which is a unique characteristic of each video. This research aims to identify video content in the network without looking at the data itself.

This research would be especially useful in preventing illegal distribution of television program such as illegal channel without violating user privacy. Another application would be to prevent confidential online meeting from leaking outside local enterprise network. In addition, it is also possible to investigate the circulation of a video content using method introduced by this work.

Development of next-generation sterilization method by a plasma flow at atmospheric pressure

NEXT
PREV
特徴・独自性
  • Plasma sterilization has been developed as an alternative sterilization method due to its chemical activity, operation at low temperature and atmospheric pressure, low power consumption, low cost and safety. We have studied a mechanism of chemical species generation and transport in a plasma flow and, the sterilization efficacy and mechanism for several plasma sources at atmospheric pressure, such as a microwave plasma flow, a dielectric barrier discharge in a tube and a water vapor plasma flow. We already clarified that the damages of outer membrane and destructions of the cytoplasmic membrane of Escherichia coli by exposure to the microwave plasma flow. Fig. 1 shows the effect of plasma exposure on the E. coli. When the E. coli was exposed to the plasma, the height of the E. coli decreased and the potassium leakage of cytoplasmic material increased. For sterilization in a tube, we also clarified that an induced flow in the narrow tube by DBD transports chemical species and sterilize the whole inside surface of a tube as shown in Fig. 2. We hope to conduct collaborative research with a willing company for a practical application of this technology in industry.

Lethal effects of blue light on insects

NEXT
PREV
特徴・独自性
  • We revealed the strong lethal effect of short-wavelength visible light (blue light: 400–500 nm) on insects. That is, we found that blue light irradiation by using a common light-emitting diode (LED) can kill the eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults of various orders of insects. Our findings will provide clean and safe pest-control technique as well as important information on the hazards of exposure to visible light.

NEXT
PREV
特徴・独自性
  • Toward realizing a high-performance neuromorphic vision processing system, our research involves a neural network model of spatial perception based on motion-stereo vision and its implementation on a very large scale integrated circuit (VLSI). Important parameters for spatial perception such as time-to-contact, orientation, and the shortest distance to plane surfaces of a target object are recognized by using the model without knowing moving direction and velocity of the object. We have developed a VLSI capable of performing visual perception based on the model with low power consumption, reduced less than 1/100 compared with a commercial CPU.

A Microwave-Based Non-Destructive Testing Method for the Long Range Inspection of Metallic Pipe

NEXT
PREV
特徴・独自性
  • We are developing a non-destructive testing method for the long range rapid inspection of metallic pipe using microwaves. The method propagates a microwave inside a pipe, and evaluates flaws appearing at the inner surface of the pipe on the basis of the reflection and transmission of the microwave. The method does not require scanning probes unlike conventional non-destructive methods, which enables one to inspect a pipe quite quickly. Our experimental validations have demonstrated the effectiveness of the method using a pipe as long as 30 m.

Development of a reaction process in supercritical water

NEXT
PREV
特徴・独自性
  • We are developing a new continuous flow type process for supercritical reactions. Under the supercritical state, the organic molecules and metal salt aqueous solutions are miscible and water molecule works as an acid/base catalyst which leads to rapid reactions. In order to apply such new reaction fields to an industrial process, it is necessary to establish the process design basis by understanding phenomena in the reaction fields, on the basis of phase equilibrium, flux and reaction kinetics theory. So while developing a process, we are doing research for the establishment of the process design basis.

Low temperature reforming of hydrocarbons using metal oxide nanoparticles synthesized by supercritical method

NEXT
PREV
特徴・独自性
  • Our research group has succeeded in synthesizing various metal oxide nanoparticles with controlled size and exposure crystal planes by using organic modifiers under supercritical water conditions. The oxygen storage/release capacity of those materials in the low-temperature region is very high, and the reforming reaction of oxidative hydrocarbon proceeds at a significant rate. Besides, by combining the supercritical CO2 drying method, we have succeeded in forming a complex in which oxide nanoparticles are dispersed at a high concentration on the surface of the porous material, realizing both high oxygen storage/release capability and stability.

The Construction of a Decentralized Energy Production System Using Small Methane Fermentation Systems That Utilize Exhaust Heat or Hot Springs and a Local Circulation System

NEXT
PREV
特徴・独自性
  • In this project, we reduce the costs of energy production via anaerobic digestion by utilizing exhaust heat from a factory, which resulted in a positive energy balance, although the methane fermentation system tested was on a small scale.
  • Using small-scale methane fermentation with a positive energy balance, the initial investment is small, enabling a company to invest in, and install, such a system. This would decentralize energy production within an area. Moreover, this system not only produces energy, but is a basis for resource recycling.
